Queensland may have missed out in this year’s State of Origin, but we can claim a far bigger win off the field. The latest CommBank State of the States report shows Queensland rising to become Australia’s top‑performing state, overtaking mining‑strong WA thanks to a surge in dwelling investment (+16.8%) and strong business investment (+9%).
With low unemployment, solid wage growth, and top‑three rankings across five of six key indicators, the Sunshine State’s strength comes from consistent, broad‑based economic activity rather than a single standout metric.
This momentum comes despite a recent S&P credit rating downgrade from AA+ to AA. Queensland’s fundamentals remain exceptionally strong, with GSP (Gross State Product) per capita above $US60,000, unemployment at just 4.2%, and steady growth forecasts of 1.75–2.25% over the next three years. In short, Queensland’s economy is proving resilient, diversified, and powered by real investment.
